BMW R Nine T Cafe Racer Motorcycle

BMW Motorrad has launched the R nine T motorcycle in India. The bike is one of the cooler looking BMW motorcycles since it is based on a cafe racer theme. The BMW R nine T is priced at Rs. 23.5 lakhs ex-showroom Mumbai and is a straight CBU import from Germany. This bike is called the R nine T as it celebrates BMW Motorrad’s 90 years of existence in the motorcycle business. The R nine T comes with a detachable pillion seat that can be replaced by a racing cowl to give it a more sporty look.

BMW i8 review, test drive

The BMW i8 looks fantastic and its 357bhp hybrid powertrain sounds very impressive on paper. But what kind of a driver-experience does it offer?

BMW i8 production version.

The BMW i8 is the zen-like, sustainable, low-emissions, petrol-electric, ‘new premium’ German sports car of the future. Expressions of concept don’t get much more complicated. But, while the two most important words in that string get crowded out by their louder neighbours, they are undoubtedly ‘sports car’. Or rather they should have been – written in bold, enlarged, indelible type.
Unfortunately – predictably, perhaps – that probably wasn’t quite how it was. Because the i8 turns out to be a car of incredible visual impact, laudably mature execution, and offers a uniquely appealing ownership proposition. But drive it and you won't be acquainting yourself with the undeniable perfect future of the sports car – but instead a BMW that doesn't deliver the engaging edge an enthusiast might expect.
It should be like a Porsche 918 Spyder for a fifth of the outlay. It’s certainly got some promising ingredients.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder Mini Cooper engine cradled between the i8’s back wheels has a higher specific output than any production combustion engine that BMW currently makes, feeding 228bhp and 32.6kgm to the rear wheels of the car via a six-speed ZF automatic transmission. Between the front wheels, there’s a 128bhp, 25.4kgm ‘hybrid synchronous’ electric motor, driving those front wheels through a two-speed automatic transmission.
And here’s the clever bit. That electric motor and transmission, the 7.1kWh lithium ion battery mounted where the car’s transmission tunnel might otherwise be and the high-voltage power management system add almost exactly 200kg to the i8. Relative to an aluminium or steel equivalent, says BMW, the carbonfibre-reinforced plastic monocoque saves exactly 200kg. So the car weighs in at 1540kg with fluids onboard: which is less than a current Porsche 911 Turbo, never mind the 918.

The i8’s two-speed gearbox, meanwhile, allows the electric motor to operate at peak torque as the combustion engine passes its torque peak in the lower intermediate gears. And that means, as well as 357bhp, you really do get 58.06kgm of mid-range thrust from this car at times. And it feels like it.
Early impressions of the i8 are of nothing less than a fully fledged supercar. The body looks ridiculously low, wide and ground-hugging. The styling’s got smack-in-the-chops impact to rival a Lamborghini, and scissor doors for belt-and-braces extravagant effect.
You have to fold yourself into the cabin between a low roofline and a high, wide, expensive-looking sill. And once you have, the interior’s got no less of a sense of occasion to it, with a generously sculptural, driver-focused dashboard, colourful LCD instruments, low-slung and deep-dished sports seats; there's also an abundance of little features and touches that lift the ambience way above BMW’s usual conservative norm.

So it talks the talk, the i8 – loud and clear. Walking the walk of something as pure as a Porsche 911 was always going to be the harder bit. On handling precision and that final sliver of driver engagement, the BMW falls short of brilliance. But it’s good, and almost there. Certainly good enough to consider the car an amazing success in its own hyper-specialised niche.
Right up until you go looking for that critical last fraction of driver appeal, in fact, the i8 does almost everything right. Starting off with ‘Comfort’ mode selected on its adaptive dampers and near-silent drive turning its front wheels, the i8 is comfortable and super-civilised around town. It’s a bit choppy-riding occasionally, but not often.

Its steering is light but there's a modicum of well-judged feedback, and performance is entirely decent in electric mode. Electric-only range is a bit low, in reality about 24km. But the BMW seldom operates like a range-extended EV unless you explicitly instruct it to anyway, its combustion engine regularly chiming in through most drive modes, even when the battery is relatively well charged.
Knock the gear selector into ‘Sport’ mode and the engine begins to run almost continually. Gun the accelerator away from a standstill and the powertrain feels like a big V6: instant and heavy-hitting on pedal response, but with a loud, gruff, synthesized soundtrack broadcast to you over the audio speakers.
Yet the harder it revs and the faster you go, the smaller that imaginary V6 seems. Work it really hard beyond 5000rpm and the i8’s performance level feels a touch thin and strained.
The car’s handling stands up more stoutly to inspection – but not indefinitely. Body control is excellent; steering response equally immediate. Lateral grip levels could be higher, particularly at the front wheels, which begin to scrabble and scream under load if you harry them.

Drive intelligently though, using weight transfer to give the steering authority on turn-in, and the i8 responds for the most part like any good mid-engined machine should: with some balance and alacrity, but exceptional in neither.
The rear axle is always glued to its line, giving dependable stability. It declines any attempt to adjust your arc through a corner with a bit of throttle-steering. That's a typical facet of a car that just doesn’t respond well to being driven hard, and one that approaches its adhesive limits a bit early for our tastes.
The i8 can be enjoyed vividly enough as you approach that point, of course. But not ultimately as vividly as a sports car at this price point really ought.
If you genuinely don’t mind compromising on sporting clarity of purpose for lower emissions, enhanced economy and of-the-moment desirability, then you should definitely opt for the BMW i8. But if that’s you, the sports car market would seem to be a strange place to go shopping for your next car anyway.
The BMW i8 doesn’t quite feel as exciting as it does fast; it’s secure and fluent, but not the last word in fun. Accounting for its novelty value, brimming supercar attitude and its low-emissions sense of environmental responsibility, it’ll be more than sporting enough to satisfy people who couldn’t otherwise have justified a sports car.
But it’s not quite convincing enough to hit the heights that true enthusiasts will expect of it. There is all the intriguing complexity in the world to contemplate here, but sadly not quite enough depth.

BMW i8 Spyder

BMW i8 Spyder Concept

BMW could be poised to expand its i8 range, beyond the hardtop version of the plug-in hybrid supercar. A report from Bimmerpost is claiming that the i8 Spyder, which we showed you in concept form at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, will be heading to production.

The website claims the open-roof fuel-sipper was shown to BMW management last Friday as a production-intent model. Other than that, there's not a lot to tell here. The i8 Spyder should feature all the same mechanical and aesthetic features found on the i8 Coupe, just without the confining nature of a roof. It's unclear when we'll see a production i8 droptop make its debut, although this certainly strikes us as the kind of car that should arrive at the Geneva Motor Show.

While an i8 Spyder does seem like a logical leap for BMW's i sub-brand, we're going to keep this one filed under the rumors category until we hear more.

DAZZLING BMW X1 2014 MODEL

2014 BMW X1
The compact crossover from the Bavarian carmaker is up for another facelift. However, the changes brought about this time are very subtle as far as exteriors are concerned. On the inside, equipment updates and a few added features and services are introduced. The 2014 BMW X1 will feature refreshed exterior accents and new air intake vents in the front apron. The crossover will also boast of a new V-design of the 17-inch alloy wheels and daytime running lights will now come as standard. BMW will also be introducing a new Sparkling Brown Metallic colour on the 2014 X1. The last mention of the exterior updates is the stainless steel finish at the bottom edge of the tailgate.

The interior trim panels of the BMW X1 are now available in newer options such as gloss black, matte coral-red or pearl gloss chrome finish. The surface of the instrument cluster will also be wrapped in a soft-touch material with lapfolded seams which adds to the premium sense of the car. The aforementioned updates are available for the xLine, Sport Line, or the M Sport trim. New services in the BMW ConnectedDrive form a major chunk of updates. Internet based services such as Online Entertainment can be subscribed to installed as applications. Another app ECO PRO analyser helps you monitor your driving patterns.

There is no change in the engines of the 2014 BMW X1. In the Indian market, the X1 will continue to be powered by the 2.0-litre sDrive20d, 4-cylinder diesel engine which produces 184 BHP of power, 380 Nm of torque, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The changes in the 2014 model are just an effort to maintain the popularity of the X1. These changes will be the last of the lot as BMW is planning to launch an entirely new model for the year 2016. The updated BMW X1 will be showcased at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show to be held In January.

Audi Vs BMW Markets in India

The battle of the Teutons just got interesting even as Audi India edged passed competitor and compatriot BMW India in the June 2012 sales. Audi managed to sell 759 cars amidst difficult market conditions even as BMW could manage only 750 units, 9 units lesser than that of Audi India. The Volkswagen group owned car maker Audi is fast catching up with BMW in terms of sales in the Indian car market on the back of new launches and aggressive price positioning. While Audi aims to displace BMW from the top perch in India by 2014, the sales momentum currently seems to heavily be in Audi’s favor to achieve that feat much earlier.

2013 Mini Cooper Interiors

The 2013 Mini Cooper range of sporty hatchbacks will now get a more conventional speedometer instead of the current dashboard design of mounting the speedometer centrally. The main reason for the central mounting of the speedometer being done away with is due to safety concerns. The central mounting of the speedometer is said to be distracting to the driver, which could possibly cause accidents. So, the current Mini range come with a digital speedometer in the conventional position along with th centrally mounted analog unit. However, the 2013 models of the Mini Cooper range will feature the speedometer behind the steering wheel.

BMW India will launch the all new 3 Series sedan, a very important car for the German luxury car maker, on the 3rd of August, 2012. The F30 3 Series sedan is the latest in the 3 series range and in its latest iteration, the car is both bigger on the outside and the inside. A grown up 3 Series sedan is what the F30 model actually is, with the length increasing by 93 mm, wheelbase by almost 2 inches and width by 1.5 inches. This car will be instrumental in BMW India fending off competitor and compatriot Audi, which is close on the heels of BMW in terms of sales figures in India.

Market Rumors flow about 2012 Mercedez Benz B-Class

Mercedes Benz India has made no bones about the fact that it intends to capture back market share that it has lost to competitors and compatriots, Audi and BMW over the past couple of years or so, with a slew of product launches aiming to bring in big volumes. The first car in this new crop of Mercs will be the 2012 B-Class Sports Tourer, which could break cover as early as July 2012, according to a report carried by our friends over at Overdrive. The 2012 B-Class sport tourer will be Mercedes Benz India’s entry level product, competing in the same price range as that of the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 crossovers.

2012 Audi Q3 Crossover

It seems like the consistent big growth has emboldened Volkswagen group owned German luxury car brand Audi, for the car maker hopes to displace current market leader BMW India by 2014, a year ahead of schedule. Previously, Audi aimed to emerge as the top luxury car brand in India by 2015. However, the recent success that the brand has been seeing in India has prompted the automaker to revise forecasts. Audi India recently moved past Mercedes Benz to emerge as the second largest luxury car maker in the Indian market despite being the youngest of the German trio to begin doing business in India.

BMW's drive 1 Series hatchback at the 2012 Paris Motor Show for unveil

Thus far, the world leader in premium luxury cars, German automaker BMW, has been synonymous with a rear wheel drive layout, said to be a key factor for the excellent handling dynamics BMW cars are world renowned for. In the second half of 2012 though, everything could change. At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, BMW plan to unveil an entry level car with a front wheel drive layout. The BMW 1 Series GT hatchback could be the first Beemer to come with a front wheel drive layout, of course, this after discounting the BMW owned Mini brand of sporty hatchbacks.

Audi Q3 Crossover's music video challenging BMW X1

Days ago, in a low key launch, Audi India launched its entry level, high volume product for the Indian car market, the Q3 Crossover. While the launch happened amidst low fanfare, with an emailed press release announcing the Q3 going on sale in the Indian car market, the crossover in itself is one of the most important products in the Volkswagen group owned German luxury car maker’s Indian portfolio. So, Audi India is going all out to ensure that the Q3 gets enough visibility for traction at the hustings. Here is a little music video in the form of an anthem that Audi has out put out for the Q3.
