Beijing 2014: Volkswagen NMC concept revealed

New mid-sized, style based sedan will be based on Jetta-based model, will be positioned beneath the Passat CC model in VW line up.

The Volkswagen NMC – New Midsize Coupé – concept unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, previews a new Jetta-based model and will be positioned beneath the CC model in the Volkswagen line-up.
Volkswagen’s New Midsize Coupé makes official the German carmaker’s plans for a style-led sedan to challenge the likes of the very popular Mercedes-Benz CLA.
Volkswagen design boss Klaus Bischoff describes the NMC as “avant-garde protagonist for a new compact sedan class”. The new NMC continues the Volkswagen design lineage, with crisp feature lines, heavily horizontal detailing and taut surfacing – all aimed at providing it with a technical-inspired appearance.
A simple grille and LED headlamps span the width of the front end, giving the new car clear family ties to other recent new Volkswagen models. In a bid to provide it with added sportiness, VW designers have taken inspiration from the CC in providing the NMC with a heavily curved roofline, frameless doors and notchback style rear.
At 4597mm in length, 1838mm in width and 1422mm in height, the NMC is 48mm shorter, 58mm wider and 58mm lower than the existing Jetta, with which the production version is expected to share the 2650m wheelbase. By comparison, the CLA measures 4630mm in length, 1777mm in width and 1432mm in height, while riding on a 2699mm wheelbase.



The Volkswagen design team has provided the Volkswagen NMC with towering 20-inch wheels shod with 245/40 profile rubber for the show in Beijing. The concept at Beijing motor show is powered by the same 217bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre direct-injection four-cylinder petrol engine as the seventh-generation Golf GTI, in an indication that the production version of the NMC will offer more than adequate performance. Underpinning the Mercedes-Benz CLA-rivaling sedan will be Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform.
Volkswagen claims that the NMC boasts of similar levels of interior accommodation to the Jetta, with room for five adults. Its claimed 500 litres of boot space is just 10 litres less than that offered by its more conventional four door sibling.
The transversely mounted unit places its power to the road via a seven-speed dual clutch auto gearbox, providing the front-wheel-drive sedan with a theoretical 0-100kph time of 6.5sec and 245kph top speed.
The production version of the NMC is set to roll out of both, the Volkswagen plant in Puebla, Mexico and a joint venture factory in China.

Volkswagen follows XL1 style

The XL1, which looks like an ugly cross between a platypus and an automobile finally has something useful to offer, apart from its slippery aerodynamics that is. Volkswagen’s R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg has just announced that a diesel version of the Up! hatchback is in the works. The diesel engined Up! will use a twin cylinder, 800cc TDI turbo diesel engine that will be borrowed from the XL1 concept. This engine is basically a chopped unit from the four cylinder 1.6 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine that a range of Volkswagen group cars like the Vento and Rapid sedans use.

Volkswagen India has launched the Jetta sedan’s petrol engined variant at a price of INR 13.6 lakhs for the entry level Trendline variant. The mid level Comfortline  variant sells for INR 15.07 lakhs, both prices being ex-showroom Delhi figures. The 2012 Jetta ptrol sedan is powered by a 1.4 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine and direct injection. This engine generates a peak power of 122 Bhp while peak torque comes in at 200 Nm. The engine is mated to a six speed manual gearbox. The car will now form the entry level variant of the Jetta’s range in India.

Come 2016, German automaker Volkswagen will launch a crossover version of the highly popular Polo hatchback, to be sold in markets across the world. Compact SUVs and crossovers are the new engine of growth for automakers across the world and Volkswagen too will get into the fray with the Polo based crossover.The Polo based crossover, scheduled to debut in 2016, will be based on the next generation Polo platform. But much before that, Volkswagen is also said to be working on crossover variant of its entry level hatchback, the Up!.

Navistar International being eyed by Volkswagen & Fiat group

Navistar International is a struggling Amercian truck maker, which also happens to have a joint venture with Indian conglomerate, Mahindra, to build heavy commercial vehicles for the Indian truck market. Navistar has been posting losses for a while now due to expensive warranty issues and this means that the truck makes is now on the sale block. German automaker Volkswagen and Italian automaker Fiat are said to be the two groups mulling separate bids for Navistar International as this would give the brands a foothold in the American commercial vehicle market.

Plans of Volkswagen to set up engine plant in India

Over the next couple of years, the Volkswagen group expects to build a range of engines to power a slew of brands within the group. This engine plant could come up by 2014, in Chakan, Pune, which is said to be the first choice of the VW group for setting up the new engine plant. However, the final decision on the location of the engine plant is yet to be taken as Volkswagen is not happy with the Maharashtra government’s VAT policy, which continues to be a bone of contention amongst almost all the automakers seeking to make fresh investments in the highly industrialized Indian state.

The all new 2012 Volkswagen Jetta sedan that was launched last year is selling reasonably well, especially when compared to the older variant which struggled to move out of showroom floors. The new car looks much more better or say, even contemporary, when compared to the older version, although it is still as inspiring as a refrigerator when it comes to the design on the outside. Design apart, the car is a well put together classic German sedan with all the solidity that one has come to expect of German cars. On the inside, the car reeks of top notch quality with the touch and feel of materials exuding a distinctly premium feel.
