Hyundia India has begun testing the 2012
Elantra Sedan sans camouflage hinting at a launch that could happen in
the near future. The Elantra Fluidic, which was showcased at the 2012
Indian Auto Expo, is also known as the Avante in international markets.
This D-segment car has been a huge success for Hyundai globally and when
the car arrives into India, it will be a long due replacement for the
now-discontinued Elantra sedan, which the South Korean car maker used to
sell in the country many years ago. The uncamouflaged 2012 Elantra
Fluidic car has been spotted on the outskirts of Chennai, a city which
plays host to Hyundai’s Indian factory.
However, the possibility of Hyundai
plonking in the 1.6 Liter turbo diesel engine found on the Verna
Fluidic, into the Elantra’s engine bay, is something that cannot be
discounted just as yet. The petrol engine option will be a 1.8 Liter gas
direct injection unit producing 148 Bhp of peak power and 177 Nm of
peak torque. Both the petrol and diesel engines could be mated to 6
speed manual gearboxes as standard. A 6 speed automatic gearbox could be
offered on the top end variants given that Hyundai has been packing its
cars with a range of features and optional equipment.
Stylistically, the Elantra is a very
sharp looker, easily one of the best looking car in Hyundai’s line up
with the Fluidic design philosophy endowing this car with just the right
amount of curves. On the safety front, the car will get a full
complement of 6 airbags along with ABS, EBD and ESP. The car will also
get a range of creature comforts ranging from a sun roof to a reverse
parking camera. Electrically adjustable seats could be standard given
the segment at which this car operates in. The Elantra is expected to be
priced quite competitively, with the car challenging the likes of the
Toyota Corolla Altis and the Chevrolet Cruze.
