Facelifted Tata Winger expected to get 2.2 Liter DICOR Turbo Diesel Engine

Our roving eye in the sky, EarthFusion, is back with a juicy bit about the Tata Winger. Tata Motors is testing a 2. Liter DICOR turbo diesel engine on Winger MPV. The Tata Winger MPV, a van that is strikingly similar to the previous generation Renault Traffic, will get a makeover in the future and along with the facelift, the 2.2 Liter DICOR engine is said to be big change. Currently, the 2.2 Liter DICORturbo diesel engine is used in a range of Tata vehicles, ranging from the Sumo Grande to the top of the line Aria crossover. However, on the Winger, the engine is expected be in a state of tune similar to that on the Sumo Grande.

Currently, the Winger comes with a two liter diesel engine that comes in two states of tune. The non turbocharged version of this 2 Liter engine pumps out 68 Bhp while the turbocharged-intercooled engine puts out 90 Bhp. The Winger comes in a range of seating options, ranging from 10 to 14 seater versions. The van finds application in a wide range of sectors, right from the people mover cabbie segment to diverse uses such as an ambulance and a delivery van. Tata Motors has big plans for the Winger, which we will be covering in a separate story. For now though, the big scoop is about the 2.2 Liter DICOR engine.

The 2.2 Liter DICOR turbocharged intercooled diesel engine was designed and developed by AVL, an engineering firm from Austria, with inputs from Tata Motors. The engine uses a common rail direct injection system developed by Delphi. The turbocharger is from Honeywell. This engine was first introduced on the Tata Safari SUV, replacing the 3 Liter DICOR unit. Ever since, the rugged diesel engine has done duty in a variety of Tata vehicles, in different states of tune. Thus, the 2.2 Liter DICOR engine is now a staple in Tata Motors’ line up, just like the 2.2. Liter mHawk and mEagle engines that arch rival Mahindra uses across its range.

The engine features a heavy amount of localization with many parts being built in-house by Tata Motors themselves. This means that access to spares is both timely as well as reasonable in price, especially when compared to the more expensive foreign diesel engines.
