They say, nothing succeeds like success.
Proof of concept: The 2012 Mahindra XUV500 crossover. For the first two
rounds of bookings, Mahindra limited it to 19 Indian cities. Even so,
the response has been phenomenal. For the third round though, the
automaker has thrown open bookings for the XUV500 across India and the
result of course, is absolute mayhem when it comes to the number of
bookings this flagship crossover has clocked. 7,200 bookings in just 2
days is what the Mahindra XUV500 has had to show for.
To cater to the massive demand for the
XUV500 while ensuring that customers do not have for inordinate periods
of time after booking this SUV, Mahindra had stopped taking fresh
bookings in the first two rounds of booking the SUV after a certain
number of orders were achieved. The reason for this move was due to the
fact that Mahindra wanted to limit waiting periods for the XUV500 to 2
months. Now though, the automaker has bumped up capacity at its Chakan
manufacturing unit to 4,000 units of the XUV500 per month. The
production will further increase to 5,000 units every month from
September 2012.
By the looks of it, Mahindra could close
the bookings for the XUV500 yet again, once it gathers a certain number
of orders. Given such a steep demand, the production of even 5,000 units
per month is not expected to suffice considering that Mahindra also has
plans of exporting the XUV500 to makers across the world, beginning
from the next few months. For now though, the bookings for the XUV500 is
open at over 100 Indian cities and if you want one, you should rush to
your nearest Mahindra dealer to book this crossover before bookings
close due to the incessant demand.
Currently, the Mahindra XUV500 is
available in three variants, W6, W8 and W8 AWD. Of these, the W6 and W8
variants are front wheel driven while the W8 AWD comes with an all wheel
drive layout. The Mahindra XUV500 features a 2.2 liter common rail
turbo diesel engine producing 140 Bhp-330 Nm. This engine is mated to a 6
speed manual transmission. In the future, Mahindra does have plans of
launching an automatic gearbox for the XUV500 although this is something
that will take a year or two. The monocoque bodied XUV500 is loaded in
terms of equipment levels and features for the price you pay for it, a
major reason for the crossover’s stellar success at the hustings.
