When two strokes still reigned supreme in
India and wih the likes of the Honda Activa and the Dio not yet on the
horizon, the Kinetic Honda scooter and the TVS Scooty scooterette were
the two products that the college crowd of India commuted on. The Scooty
was most favored by the fairer sex as it was much smaller and lighter
than the Kinetic Honda. Ever since, the Scooty has evolved into electric
variants and the more powerful, four stroke Pep variant. With
competition increasing in the form of Mahindra Two Wheelers and Hero
MotoCorp upping the marketing ante, the South Indian company has now
appointed Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma as the brand ambassador for
the Scooty range.
Mahindra Two Wheelers has appointed
Kareena Kapoor to promote its range of automatic scooters while Hero
MotoCorp has Priyanka Chopra doing brand endorsement duties. Both these
women are popular Bollywood actresses in India. apart from Anushka
Sharma, TVS Motors has had southern actress Trisha Krishnan endorsing
the Scooty range over the past few years. Trisha Krishnan, being a South
Indian actress was well accepted down south. However, Anushka Sharma,
along with Bollywood’s pan-India reach, will be a more recognizable
face, prompting her signing up by TVS.
TVS Motors has never shied away from
using celebrities and sports icons to endorse its range of products.
Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar used to endorse the TVS Victor 110cc
four stroke economuter motorcycle. Currently, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli
are the two Indian cricketers who endorse TVS’ Star City range of
commuter motorcycles. Coming back to TVS Motors’ Scooty range, the range
of scooterettes are lighter and cheaper than most other automatic
scooters in the markets and are hence preferred by women, while the men
prefer the more powerful range of automatic scooters.
TVS, along with Mahindra Two
Wheelers(Remember the Mahindra Kine?), are the only two brands which
still makes scooterettes in India, giving both these brands a unique
appeal, especially amongst college going girls. Also, TVS has a 110cc
four stroke automatic scooter in the form of the Wego 110, which has
been very successful. In the coming months, TVS Motors will expand its
automatic scooter portfolio with the launch of a 125cc four stroke
offering and a test launch of a hybrid scooter, which will be a first
for the Indian scooter market.
