Audi India has launched the hotly anticipated Q3 crossover in the Indian car market. While the launch was quite restrained with merely a press release signifying the Q3′s arrival into India, the automaker has definitely managed to price the Q3 extremely competitively. The 2012 Audi Q3 crossover is available for a base price of INR 26.21 lakhs for the base variant while the fully loaded top end version will sell for INR 31.49 lakhs. Both prices reflect ex-showroom Maharashtra figures and the Q3 will be available initially only in diesel guise.
The 2012 Audi Q3 sold in India comes with the 2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine producing a peak power of 177 Bhp and a peak torque of 350 Nm. This diesel engine is mated to a 7 speed dual clutch DSG automatic gearbox. This engine is found on a range of Audi cars ranging from the A4 and A6 sedans to the Q5 crossover. The pricing is what Audi India should be commended for as the base variant of the diesel Q3 undercuts the BMW X1 crossover, Audi’s direct competitor. The base variant of the Q3 Crossover is just marginally more expensive than the BMW X1′s base diesel.

However, the additional lakh rupees that you will have to shell out for the Audi Q3 will buy you the Quattro all wheel drive system. This is a big difference between the Audi and the BMW as the X1 is available only with a rear wheel drive system while the Audi trumps the Beemer with the Quattro all wheel drive system. However both cars are predominantly crossovers rather than real SUVs. With the Q3, Audi will be hoping to bolster its leadership position in India’s luxury SUV market, which it currently leads with the Q5 and Q7 crossovers.

After displacing Mercedes Benz from the second position in India’s luxury car segment, Audi now has its guns trained at market leader BMW. The Q3 is expected to give Audi enough volumes to mount a stiff challenge to BMW’s leadership position. Coming back to the Q3, the crossover can be specified with the panoramic sunroof and storage package as an option in both the variants. The Audi Q3 will be assembled from CKD kits at the car maker’s Aurangabad plant in India and given the high demand for this crossover across the world, only 500 Audi Q3s will be available for initial bookings across Audi’s 19 dealerships in India.
