In 3 years of its launch in India, the
Mahindra Xylo MPV has gone from strength to strength, with domestic
sales managing to cross the 1 lakh mark. Launched in early 2009, the
Xylo MPV was positioned as a rival to the Innova and Mahindra came up
with an innovative marketing pitch, positioning the Xylo as an alternate
to the C-segment sedans, offering more space and versatility. while the
Xylo never really managed to dethrone the Toyota Innova, by itself, the
MPV has managed to do decent numbers, as is evident with the sales
figures for the past 3 years.
The Mahindra Xylo has been positioned
below the Scorpio SUV right from the very beginning and is a seven
seater. The MPV got a facelift earlier this year, wih many new features
added, revised styling and a brand new engine option. While the facelift
has done its bit to keep the Xylo fresh and updated, the MPV still lags
behind the Innova when it comes to the sales numbers as the Innova too
got a facelift earlier this year, which was unveiled at the 2012 Indian
Auto Expo. however, the Xylo trumps the Innova in terms of the sheer
number of variants and engine options on offer.
Also, the Xylo being priced lower than
the Innova, along with the larger number of variants, gives the customer
more choice. Currently, Mahindra sells the Xylo with three turbo diesel
engine options spread across five variants. The base variants of the
Xylo, namely the D2 and D4, aimed mainly at the cabbie crowd, feature
the 2.5 Liter MDi CRDe 95 Bhp-220 Nm engine. The mid level variants of
the Xylo, called the E4 and E8 feature the 2.5 Liter common rail mEagle
turbo diesel engine pumping out 112 Bhp-260 Nm.
The top end variant of the Xylo, namely
the E9, features the top of the line 2.2 Liter mHawk engine, producing
120 Bhp-280 Nm. This engine has been lifted straight from the Scorpio
SUV and in a more powerful guise, also powers the flagship XUV500. The
facelifted Xylo now comes with features like cruise control, voice
activated controls and reverse sensors. Safety equipment includes twin
airbags for the driver and front passenger along with ABS and EBD. The
2012 Xylo MPV is priced between INR 7.33 lakhs for the base D2 variant,
to INR 10.47 lakhs, for the top end E9 variant, all prices reflecting
ex-showroom Delhi figures.
