Indepth Details of 2016 Volkswagen Polo Crossover Render

Come 2016, German automaker Volkswagen will launch a crossover version of the highly popular Polo hatchback, to be sold in markets across the world. Compact SUVs and crossovers are the new engine of growth for automakers across the world and Volkswagen too will get into the fray with the Polo based crossover. The Polo based crossover, scheduled to debut in 2016, will be based on the next generation Polo platform. But much before that, Volkswagen is also said to be working on crossover variant of its entry level hatchback, the Up!.

The Up! based crossover is expected to debut as early as 2014, with a lengthened wheelbase and suitable modifications to the looks to form an off road variant. Other details about the 2014 Up! based crossover including the engines to be offered remain unknown at the moment. Currently, the smallest diesel engine that Volkswagen has on production cars is the 1.2 Liter TDI unit offered on the Polo. However, the firm also has a 800c, twin cylinder TDI unit that powers the super frugal XL1 concept. However, expect the 1.2 TDI engine to be used on the Up! Crossover as the lengthened wheelbase is expected to add more bulk.

Coming to the petrol engines, Volkswagen has a wide range to choose from, with the 1.2 TSI turbo petrol unit being the most likely option for a crossover based on the Up!. Why, even the Skoda Yeti is offered with the 1.2 TSI engine in Europe. The 2016 Polo Crossover,on the other hand is expected to feature 1.4 liter TDI turbo diesel engine outputting about 95 Bhp while the petrol engine option is said to be the 1.4 Liter, 105 Bhp TSI unit. For now, the specification kit gets even more impressive with a dual clutch automatic DSG gearbox being in the realm of speculation.

The Up! and the Polo are big selling models for Volkswagen in markets across the world and likewise, expect the crossover variants to also follow suit. While the Polo hatchback is being sold in India, the Up! is still stuck in feasibility studies. That said, crossover variants of both the Up! and the Polo could be bound to the Indian market, given the big demand for SUVs in India. The next big launch in the high volume budget SUV space is the Renault Duster, which will break cover on the 4th of July. Over the next few years, a range of compact SUVs will be launched in India. So, Volkswagen joining this party in India is something that has a very high probability.
