Mercedes Benz India will unveil the
B-Class Sports Tourer on the 19th of July, 2012. The B-Class will be
positioned as a sports tourer and will be the German luxury car brand’s
least priced offering in India. The car is expected to generate big
volumes for Mercedes Benz India even as the brand tries to fight its way
back to the top. Currently, Mercedes Benz is the third largest luxury
car maker in India, after BMW and Audi. Mercedes Benz will assemble the
the B-Class Sports Tourer in India through the completely knocked
down(CKD) at Chakan, off Pune.
However, the initial few cars are
expected to arrive into India through the CBU route. Also, the 2012
B-Class could be initially available only with petrol engines, after
which a range of turbo diesel engines arrive to boost the volumes. Price
wise, the 2012 B-Class is expected to compete with the likes of the BMW
X1 and the Audi Q3 crossovers. The B-Class will be aimed at younger car
buyers, with its realtively affordable price being the carrot to entice
the younger set into beginning an enduring relationship with the three
pointed star and its promise of sporty luxury.
The Mercedes Benz B-Class, though
measuring in at about 4.2 meters in length, will be quite spacious
inside due to an intelligent and versatile space management on the
interiors. The car will be able to seat five passengers in comfort and
the space on the inside is said to rival many of the larger Mercedes
Benz cars. In fact, the B-Class is positioned as a compact luxury MPV in
the European market and that should give you an inkling on what to
expect from this car. The 2012 B-Class MPV is based on the Mercedes Benz
MFA platform with a front wheel drive layout being standard.
The car’s petrol engine is expected to be
the 1.6 Liter turbocharged unit available in two states of tune, 120
Bhp and 155 Bhp. The turbo diesel engine which is expected to follow
soon after, will be a 1.8 Liter four potter, also available in two
states of tune, 108 Bhp and 135 Bhp. A choice of a 6 speed manual and a 7
speed dual clutch automatic transmission is expected on the 2012
B-Class. Expect a range of safety and creature comforts to be standard
on the B-Class, befitting the three pointed star badge on the bonnet.
