Next-Gen Skoda Octavia/Laura

Last week, the next generation model of the Skoda Octavia(Laura in India), was caught testing on video. The new car, which is based on the Vision-D concept from Skoda is an all new model and is underpinned by the Volkswagen MQB platform. The MQB platform is also used by the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, the Seat Leon and the Audi A3. That effectively makes the 2013 Skoda Octavia the fourth car in the Volkswagen group and the first ever Skoda car to be underpinned by this brand new platform. The MQB platform will allow Volkswagen group brands to keep costs low, by sharing parts and production facilities.

Coming to the 2013 Skoda Octavia, this car is expected to be much lighter than the outgoing Octavia/Laura while being bigger than the older model. The increased size will result in a more comfortable cabin due to the additional space. The idea of having a bigger car has to do with making space for the Skoda Rapid C-segment sedan, which now sits in between the Fabia and the Octavia as the bridge model. The new Octavia is expected to be priced slightly higher than the older model due to the additional space and size.

Also, the MQB platform means that there will be significant weight reduction that will improve both performance as well as fuel economy, similar to what has been achieved in the latest Volkswagen Golf hatchback , which was unveiled just a few weeks ago, ahead of the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The 2013 Skoda Octavia/Laura is expected to retain the turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines that are offered in the current models of the Laura, albeit with changes to improve fuel economy and cut down on tail pipe emissions. So, a start-stop system is expected to be standard on the next-gen Octavia.

While the 1.8 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine is expected to be the widely sold petrol engine, the 2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine will be the volumes puller when it comes to diesel power. Transmission options are expected to include manual gearbox and DSG dual clutch automatic options, as has been the case of the current model. The 2013 Skoda Octavia is expected to debut later this year with a European launch slated for 2013. India is expected to get the new Octavia as the replacement to the Laura sometime in late 2013.
